Skyros is the southernmost island of the Sporades, a Greek archipelago in the Aegean Sea. Skyros has a great cultural tradition and exceptional landscape. The island has its own breed of the well-known Skyrian ponies. Many desert islands surround Skyros, the most important being Valaxa, Sarakiniko, Skyropoula and Platia. At 209 kmĀ² it is the largest of the Sporades, and has a population of about 3,000 (in 2003). It is part of the peripheral unit of Euboea.
